Get Inspired By Michael Phelps

The 2016 Olympics may be over, but that doesn’t mean an end to your inspiration swimming better and get fit. You can swim, train, and have fun all year round. But if you need further inspiration in your swim training, look no further than Michael Phelps.

Never Give Up

Michael Phelps, like everyone, didn’t start out as a gold medal Olympian. As the youngest American swimmer chosen for the US swim team at the age of 15, he didn’t win his first race. Instead, he took it as a challenge and a learning experience. So with persistent training and his love of swimming, Phelps eventually won a year later at the 2001 World Aquatics Championship in Fukuoka, Japan and broke a new world record.

As a recreational swimmer, it can be easy to give up the sport if you feel like you won’t be a great swimmer or think you can’t swim. But with determination and hard work, anyone can enjoy this fun and healthy activity. Swimming is a great way to exercise and is especially easy on the joints for those suffering from conditions like arthritis.

Retiring a Champion

Michael Phelps first announced his retirement back in 2012, but eventually came out of retirement to compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Even with his accomplishments, Phelps realized that he had a lot of training and work to do if he was to compete with other swimmers like Chad Le Clos. By the end of his career, he had amassed 28 metals and 23 titles, having won five gold medals and one silver in Rio.

Swimming is much like riding a bicycle—one never really forgets how to do it. Even if you haven’t swum for a while, you can still come back and get into the swing of things. It may take a little more time to get back to where you were in the past, but with training and persistence, you can be the swimmer you want to be.

Train Like Michael Phelps

After the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Phelps set up a foundation that promotes water safety and healthy living, as everyone should get the chance to swim and have fun. The goal of the foundation is to get people swimming and overcoming their fears to live a healthy life, no matter where they live.
